The brand should be filled with vibrant creativity

To celebrate the distillery's 200th anniversary, Mortlach is introducing renowned French designer Philippe Starck as its new Creative Director.

“One of the most visionary contemporary creators, Philippe Starck, joins Mortlach as our true partner and we are proud to be the first Scotch whisky brand he has ever worked with. Together we will venture into creative new heights, reinventing what whisky will represent to a generation, reimagining and rebuilding the spirit of Mortlach.” Pedro Mendonça, Global Reserve Managing Director of Diageo, said in a press release.

Diageo had redesigned the Mortlach portfolio in 2018 (we reported) after the success of the rebranding four years earlier did not show to the extent expected. Mortlach 12 Year Old The Wee Witch, Mortlach 16 Year Old Distiller's Dram and Mortlach 20 Year Old Cowie's Blue Seal have since represented the core range, which is supplemented by special releases.

With the appointment of designer Philippe Starck, the brand is now to be filled with "vibrant creativity". The MORTLACH x STARCK Debut Collection has been announced for spring 2024.

Philippe Starck has designed hotels and restaurants, worked with brands such as Adidas, Alessi, Drimmer and Vitra, designed furniture, bathroom fittings, kitchens, crockery, clothing, yachts and even living modules for a space station. One of his most famous clients was probably French Ex-President François Mitterrand, who entrusted Starck with the renovation of the president's private flat in the Elysée Palace in 1983. Mortlach is the first whisky brand Starck has worked for.
