Rum is a distillate made from sugar cane. Mostly the molasses, the waste product of sugar production, is used. There are also varieties made from sugar cane juice.
Rum is associated with the Caribbean, the beach and sunshine. The first mentions of rum date back to the 17th century. Barbados is home to the oldest rum distillery. The word rum is probably derived from the dialect word 'rumbullion', which means 'drink made from sugar cane stalks'. Or does it come from the word 'rumbustion', which means 'riot'?
Whether spelled rum, ron or rhum, it is differentiated by countless countries and by the varieties molasses rum, sugar cane rum, blended rum, rum-based spirit and spiced rum. It's a wide field to discover!
Anywhere in the world where the climatic conditions are right for sugar cane cultivation, rum can and is produced alongside sugar - from the Caribbean to Central and South America, further across the globe to the Philippines via India to the African islands of Mauritius and the Seychelles.
