Laphroaig in a new look with more environmentally friendly packaging

Laphroaig Select becomes Laphroaig Oak Select

The trend in the whisky scene is clearly moving towards more sustainability, both in terms of the production processes themselves and the packaging. Laphroaig has now also announced changes and presented a new packaging design for its range. The new packaging will reduce CO2 emissions by 30%.

With the new more environmentally friendly packaging, Laphroaig is following Beam Suntory's 'Proof Positive' sustainability strategy, explains the latest press release, and Chris Richardson, VP Global Scotch & Irish Brands, Beam Suntory, says: "The Laphroaig distillery has been making whisky for over 200 years, and it is fundamentally important we take steps to reduce our environmental impact and protect the natural resources we rely upon. This new packaging is a good step forward in our global sustainability ambitions, while still maintaining Laphroaig’s true character and exceptionally high quality.”

The changes to the outer packaging are obvious: the box will be made from more recyclable cardboard, we learn, and will have additional design features such as raised lettering with the distillery's name. The familiar round tube is thus gradually disappearing from the market and giving way to a square cardboard box, as can be seen in the pictures using the example of Laphroaig Ten.

Of course, Laphroaig fans don't have to say goodbye to the familiar green bottle with the black and white label, which will remain just like the contents: the whisky itself is not affected by the changes. The previous plastic closure, however, will be replaced by an alternative made of beech wood.

Beam Suntory has announced an additional change for Laphroaig Select: Its name will henceforth be "Oak Select" to more clearly reflect the flavour profile created by batching the whisky from six types of casks. Even with this bottling, however, the whisky itself will not change.
