Laphroaig Four Oak – New peat from Islay

Petra Milde |

A single malt formed by four different types of casks

Laphroaig Four Oak joined the portfolio of Laphroaig as a new product of the travel release range. And like all other Laphroaig Single Malts the Four Oak can be called a very peaty one. The main difference between this Laphroaig Four Oak and the other releases is the kind of maturation or to be exact: the selection of casks the whisky was matured in.  As the name Four Oak reveals this Laphroaig was batched from whisky of four different types of casks.

Different types of casks for different aromatic nuances

Ex-Bourbon barrels, Quarter Casks, fresh American white oak casks and European Hogsheads were chosen to be married for the Laphroaig Four Oak. We don’t know how long the whisky lay in the casks and was matured and we also have no information about the proportion of the four different types of casks. But the whisky is characterized as a “fusion of flavours”. And this fusion leads to these

Official tasting notes

COLOUR : Bright gold

NOSE: Laphroaig Four Oak has aromas of peat smoke with stewed fruit and warm, toasted vanilla

PALATE: Hints of sandalwood, pine, fir and willow, experience oak embers and seaweed with smooth buttercream

FINISH: Salted liquorice and peaty

Not the first Laphroaig batched from different type of casks

The combination of different type of casks to create a new release is not unusual for Laphroaig. The Laphroaig Triple Wood for example was batched from Ex-Bourbon barrels, quarter casks und European oak casks. Here for the Laphroaig Four Oak fresh American oak casks joined those three types. This fourth kind of wood was already in use for the Laphroaig QA which was mainly matured in ex-Bourbon casks bforre it got a finish in this American white oak.

Laphroaig Four Oak was bottled with 40% vol and is sold in 1 litre bottles, bound for the travel retail.
