Here we go again: this year's Big Peat Christmas Edition!

Petra Milde |

A high level of peat and a high level of alcohol characterize the annual Christmas Edition of the Big Peat

There are cherished traditions even in the fast moving whisky business with its changing trends. The release of a Big Peat Christmas Edition every year in autumn can be regarded as one of them as we came up to the fifth edition already. Since 2011 the friends of the “standard” malt whisky Big Peat have the chance to enjoy the blended malt of Douglas Laing in cask strength as a limited small batch edition.

Four Islay whiskies make the Big Peat

Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore and Port Ellen were married to create this Islay Malt Scotch Whisky, so the label tells us. This year’s Big Peat Christmas Edition has 53,8% ABV to offer and is unchillfiltered as well as uncolored. The alcohol content varies each year (for example 53,6% ABV in 2012 and 55,7% ABV in 2014) and so does the label: the design is eye-catching and unconventional and shows a different representation of the bearded protagonist each year. There’s always a relation to Christmas as it is on the edition of 2015, too. This year the bearded man comes along with a pinched face, steering a rocket sledge.

Big Peat Christmas Edition: a collector’s item too

So - one is looking forward for the new Big Peat Christmas Edition every year to enjoy a real dram of liquid peat, the other loves to enlarge his gorgeous collection on the shelf. Regardless which one is your reason to buy a bottle of this edition, you shouldn’t wait too long – it’s limited!

These are the official tasting notes:

Nose: Creamy vanilla and a touch of oak spice followed by bright notes of lemons and stewed apples and rounded off with a distinct maritime note.

Taste: Tropical fruits and freshly ground spices open up to even more citrus and a darkly sweet tone of salted caramel.

Finish: Velvety and lingering.
