Longrow Red 13 YO Malbec: new peated single malt whisky from Campbeltown
Springbank Distillery presents a special wine cask finish
The 13 Year Old Longrow Red Malbec is a new single malt whisky that joins the range of Longrows finished in Port- and wine casks. It was matured in ex-Bourbon casks for 12 years bevor it spent 15 finishing months in French red wine casks.
Malbec red wine is a very dark, nearly black wine that is well-known for its aromas of plums, blackberries, cherries and tobacco. Originally it had been an old French red wine type but meanwhile the main wine-growing areas are South America and South Africa. The casks for this Longrow Red Malbec came from South Africa.
Three different types of whisky produced at Springbank
Longrow is a single malt whisky that is produced at Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown. It is distinctly more peated than the Springbank Single Malt Whisky but it is produced only in small amount. The Longrow Label was first released in 1973 and is quite the opposite pole to the Hazelburn Whisky that is another label from Springbank Distillery. It is triple distilled and produced from unpeated malt. By the way: recently another 13 year old single malt whisky was released that was produced at Springbank Distillery. It is a bottling of the previously mentioned Hazelburn but it wasn’t paid that much attention as the Longrow Red Malbec now.
The Longrow Red 13 YO Malbec is released with 51.3 % ABV and limited to 9.000 bottles.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose: A very coastal beginning; sea salt with a fresh sea air breeze, then becomes very fruity. Sweet cocktail cherries, blackberries and red currants. A faint and subtle note of cigar boxes and tobacco comes through.
Palate: The fruitiness continues with rhubarb crumble, stewed apples and juicy plums. Cured ham follows with a very soft and delicate touch of peat with more coastal, sea salt notes.
Finish: Red wine tannins dominate, combined with smouldering campfire smoke and the ever present fresh fruit notes of prunes and cherries.
