For this Springbank the malt is kilned for 6 hours over a peat fire and 24 hours over hot air. The whiskey is then distilled two and a half times. For this, double and triple distilled raw whiskey is mixed together.

Balanced arrival, with a spike of peat which immediately falls back. This isn't a heavily peated release, I'd say it has maybe a quarter of the peat content of your average Islay malt. Barley sugar and maltiness, then the peat and spices start to build back up again over time.

Oddly, there's more peatiness in the finish than on the initial palette. Finished long with spice and black pepper.
Comment:
I remember this being good from when I last tried it. It still is. The nose is interesting, and has a distinctive mustiness. On the palate it is complex, but not overly punchy. The finish is long and satisfying. It is pretty much the textbook example of what a lightly peated malt should be. Compared to it's age statement, it comes across as much more mature than you might expect, and for the price it's basically unbeatable.
