Deanston 12 Years
The Deanston 12 years old was not chill filtered and produced from local barley. The Deanston distillery was founded in the rooms of an old cotton plant and has preserved a lot of its 19th century flair.

The nose is light and fresh, slight citrus fruit peel and herbal notes. There's a light oily graininess to it but not enough to make it register as a corn whisky if that makes sense...
Taste:

Balanced arrival, and full bodied. The presentation really brings some oomph to this one. Malty and citrussy, biscuits, the flavour builds towards pepperiness, but so does the sweetness.
Finish:

A pretty standard continuation of the palate. Medium to long in length.
Comment:
This is what I would class as a really solid standard release. It could so easily have been a basic 12 year old of the like you'll see on supermarket shelves. The higher bottling strength and lack of chill filtration really lend it some character though. It is priced very well for its quality, and worth looking out for if you see it.

Comment: Just a great "malt" bomb. Great example of how a "straight forward" whisky but done right.

Comment: There is a vein of savory notes that runs through Deanaton's 12-year old expression, and which elevates this whisky by deftly offsets a variety of sweet elements. Dusty wood notes and the sensation of under-ripe, pithy fruit add complexity on the nose, while herbal tones do the same work for the palate.
This whisky has no harshness and very little alcohol burn across the tongue and through its finish. There is a sturdy fruit sweetness that carries the finish from short-ish to medium-long, and without which one might be left disappointed that the scent/flavor buildup fell flat at crescendo.
