Tomintoul 16 Years
At the first glance the 16-year-old Tomintoul is quite similar to the 10-year-old- However, it contains more sherry cask whiskies, wich make it rounder and sweeter. Together with the longer maturation this results in a very good single malt.

![Oak Oak](/fileadmin/_processed_/e/f/csm_DarkFlavors_-_Oak_e8ab3373e6.png)
Light and fruity, pear predominantly. Red apples. Background oak aroma is almost nutty.

![Vanilla Vanilla](/fileadmin/_processed_/7/e/csm_Sweet_-_Vanilla_e272485da7.png)
Sweet arrival, fruitiness and citrus fruit. Vanilla custard. There's a slight graininess which I usually associate with younger whiskies.
Finish:

![Fruit Fruit](/fileadmin/_processed_/2/0/csm_Fruit_b73e148852.png)
Medium length. Oaky with mild spiciness, residual fruit. Relatively non descript, surprisingly dry for a relatively sweet whisky.
Comment:
An interesting one this, very fruit led throughout. Reminds me a lot of younger Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie, but with more wood involvement. Its definitely easy drinking stuff, but lacks the intensity of flavour that I look for personally, also the finish is a little one dimensional. Got to say that for a 16 year old the price is very reasonable though, and I'd take it over the aforementioned standard releases any day. Probably not one I'll come back to, but pretty good.

![Barley Barley](/fileadmin/_processed_/f/8/csm_GrainNuts_-_Barley_2f3cdbcacc.png)
Sweet barley sugar / Agave syrup. Cereal notes, biscuits. Herbal notes and spearmint - murray mints. Pretty tame stuff, and not especially aromatic.

![Coffee Coffee](/fileadmin/_processed_/d/6/csm_DarkFlavors_-_Coffee_23bf48fbbd.png)
Balanced arrival. Vanilla butterscotch at the start. There's a fair amount of wood involvement from the get go. The cereal notes remain on the palate. Wood tannins combine to an espresso like bitterness over time.
Finish:
![Barley Barley](/fileadmin/_processed_/f/8/csm_GrainNuts_-_Barley_2f3cdbcacc.png)
![Sweet Sweet](/fileadmin/_processed_/e/9/csm_Sweet_-_Sugar_9c1855377b.png)
Medium length, Residual barley sugar, lingering wood notes.
Comment:
This one's a miss for me. The nose is pretty uninteresting. On the palate it's slightly better, but there's a lack of complexity in it. The finish is pretty boring. Overall, glad I got it in half bottle format. It's not offensive in any way, just entirely forgettable.
It just goes to show how a couple of years can change both a whisky, and a person's opinion of it!
