One spirit delights connoisseurs all over the world: good rum! But what makes a rum so special? Which is the best rum?
Everyone has a different sense of taste when it comes to rum. Of course, there are differences in quality and it depends on the occasion and purpose for which you drink rum. Rum can be mild and sweet, but also strong and flavoursome. It is made from molasses or sugar cane juice and comes from the Caribbean, South America, Africa or other parts of the world. There is white and brown rum.
What makes a good rum?
A good rum is characterised above all by high-quality ingredients. The production process and maturation also play an important role. A balanced flavour is a sign of good quality. The variety of flavours is particularly pronounced in rum.
Good rum for cocktails
A brown rum from the Caribbean is traditionally recommended for the world-famous Planter's Punch rum cocktail. No less well-known is the Mojito, which can be mixed with either white or brown rum. Our recommendation is to choose light rums that do not have a dominant flavour of their own.

A rum as a gift should not be too special, unless you know the tastes and preferences of the recipient. But it doesn't necessarily have to be a Havana Club either. Choose a rum that is easy to enjoy. The rums for beginners are a good guide.

Good rum to drink straight
Many connoisseurs know rum for mixing cocktails. But can you also drink rum neat? And which rum tastes best straight? Try rums that have a special flavour due to their production or storage. These include particularly old rums and, for example, rums made from sugar cane juice. One speciality is the Rhum Agricole AOC from the French Antilles.

The 10 best rums
And which is the best rum in the world? Where does the best rum come from? These questions are not easy to answer. The age of a rum certainly plays a major role. Over the years, a unique flavour can develop. The following rums, in alphabetical order, are in demand and popular around the world:
A.H. Riise Non Plus Ultra Black Edition
Although this is a rum spirit, its full, rich flavour makes it one of the best! The base is of course also sugar cane. However, rum spirits may have a sugar content of more than 20 g per litre and the addition of colouring is permitted.
Appelton Estate 8 years
This rum from the island of Jamaica has a rich flavour of vanilla and oak. It is also very good value for money!
