The Whisky
Most of the Whisky from the Auchroisk distillery goes into the J&B blended Scotch Whisky.
There is quite a number of independent bottlings on the market from the Auchroisk distillery. The 10 year old of the Flora and Fauna series is perceived as the distillery bottling.
The distillery is rather typical for a Speyside distillery. The Whisky is unpeated with a rather light aroma and some spiciness depending mostly on the wood that was used.
The Production
The biggest problem of the Auchroisk distillery was a suitable water source. The water from Dorie's well in Banffshire was tested and compared a lot to find out, if it was suitable for a Single Malt Whisky production. Finally Justerini & Brooks (J&B) decided the quality was sufficient. The production output is about 3.4 million litres of pure alcohol per year.
The Pot Stills
Auchroisk meets this high demand of the Justerini & Brooks company with four wash stills and four spirit stills. The wash stills have a capacity of about 24,000 liters and the spirit stills of about 16,500 liters.
The pot sills have a constriction and the lyne arm is rising very slightly.
The Malting
There have never been any own maltings at the Auchroisk distillery. The distillery buys its malt without any peat smoke in it.
The Warehouse
History
The distillery was built in 1972 by the Justerini & Brooks company. The construction was finished in 1974, and the first Single Malt was released four years later.
The name of the Whisky released by the distillery was a big issue, because the Gaelic name Auchroisk was too hard to pronounce for an international audience.
The Visitor Centre
The Auchroisk distillery is an industrial complex and therefore not open to the public.
