Unlike most big brand blends, there are no coloring agents or sweeteners in the Faultline Scotch, just a pale straw colored liquid that bursts with character and, due to the heavy malt content, finishes with richness and weight. All tasting notes
Initially quite intriguing with a big whiff of fresh peat smoke, iodine and a grassy grain note. Not unlike independent bottlings of young (less than 10 year) Laphroaig (in conjunction with the grassy, lemony grain, it is apparent how they claim the "Ardbeg-like peat").
Water further develops the medicinal smoke of camphor and even juniper at times, with noticeable iodine and underlying Bourbon cask qualities (definite vanilla bean in the background).
On the palate, big smooth grain at the front, soon taken over by the fierce, nervy young Malt profile. Negligible oak contribution (slight tannin bite) and not much development.
On the finish, the fierce character of young spirit remains with light, grassy vanilla notes and again the camphor, mineral smoke.
Long astringency on the palate, but subdued, yet clean aromatic finish.
Achieved, expertly blended at the price.
