Monkey Shoulder is a rather simple but honest and decent quality Blended Malt from the Speyside of Scotland. Young Balvenie features quite prominently on the nose. Sweet fruits, candy apples and even a touch of ice wine combine with creamy honey, fine spices and hints of coffee. Delicate maltiness and restrained oak influence complement the otherwise light and sweet character on the palate. The finish is swift, woody and sugary, merging into melted dark chocolate bitterness. With an excellent price-quality ratio, this dram is certainly better than many blends.

Comment: A somewhat convoluted sweetness - some fruit and some sugar-related scents. Not 'cloying' by any means, just not well integrated. The nose is a bit overwhelming as the scents compete for attention, rather than complementing one another.
Taste is more cohesive than what is experienced on the nose. A soft combination of berry fruits - no sherry influence, I believe by its nature. A noticeable lack of oak spiciness, but vanilla is perhaps the defining characteristic of this whisky, implying ex-bourbon barrels.
This whisky's finish is not pronounced, but it lingers longer than one might expect given a lack of bold flavors.
