Lagavulin - 1998 Double Matured
This bottling of Lagavulin is part of the Distillers Edition of the Classic Malts of Scotland. In this series, the Whiskies are filled into various casks from the Iberian peninsula to finish for another six months after the regular maturation. The strong, dry and maritime character of Lagavulin is complemented with the rich and sweet aromas of a Pedro Ximenez cask.

The finishing has become shorter and less noticeable, and the overall spirit has declined into a muddled, muted smoked fish and overt caramel quality, while being noticably "spikier" (hot) on the palate.
Quite a disappointment. Time to buy the older version at auction...
