13 is deemed an unlucky number, but together with its retro label it certainly helps Craigellachie to stand out from the crowd. Tangerines, elderflower and a touch of cider make an appearance on the nose, all rather light, fruity and slightly floral. The honeyed arrival is displaced by mango, grapefruit and white pepper, while bitter herbs and tannins are pushing forward. Drying oak, lemon zest and menthol mark the prolonged and sugar-coated finish. Don't be fooled by your first impression, this whisky requires a lot of perseverance to be fully appreciated.

Nosing: Malt Orange
Malty cereal, Orange blossom. Marmalade. Fresh and fruity, but not intensely sweet smelling.

Taste: Orange Spices Pepper Cinnamon Clove Peat Smoke
Moderately intense arrival, balanced sweetness. Light and fruity initially, then spiciness starts to grow. Some black pepper, cinnamon and clove. It has a relatively thin mouth feel and starts a bit slow, but the flavour intensity builds over time with this one. There's the barest hint of peat smoke to it, something you only pick up on after spending a bit of time with it.

Finish: Spices
Long, and quite dry. Lots of residual spiciness.

Comment:
This is a decent release in my book. The nose is good, but the palate really doesn't match what you would think it would be based off it. It's much more malty and spirit driven than cask influenced. The initial flavour is quite light, and I'd rather it was more intense off the bat. The spiciness really kicks in over time though. Water doesn't help it much, looks like one of those which is best enjoyed neat. I'm almost sure that there's some peat smoke in it (very little), maybe residual from another batch at the distillery. I wish it had a thicker mouthfeel, though it is apparently without chill filtration, so go figure. The finish is fine, more of a continuation of the palate, but nothing overly interesting. It's well made stuff, and at a reasonable price, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy again.
