Lagavulin 16 Years

The classic Lagavulin is kilned with a high smoke content in the malt. The stills are pear-shaped, so that all flavors can be passed on to the condensers during distillation. The Single Malt then matures in Bourbon and Sherry casks to completion.

Nosing: peat of course, slight brine, low tide river smell

Taste: Smokey, bitter sweet, liquorice aniseed, ‘rusty’,

Finish: dry and rich

3 stars because I expected more for such a respected whisky (especially because of the price of a core range product) otherwise would of given it 4.
Comment: Had bought this for the first time having tasted most ‘core range’ single malts and bourbons, this I expected to be the climax of my whisky journey. But was slightly dissatisfied with it. I expected more flavour, I couldn’t detect much under the peat smoke (which I do like by the way) but that was it.
For Islay’s I much preferred Ardbeg 10 and Caol Ila 12.
Perhaps this is coloured which is a shame for such a well respected classic.
This I likened and reminded me of Ledaig 10 but with Ledaig the flavours were more rich and packed more of a punch.
Slightly disappointed, as I should have loved this as I have grown to love peated whisky, perhaps this is a little to challenging for me as I am quite new to whisky tasting.
