Some bottles tend to be sold out as soon as they hit the shelves, which in case of Kilkerran 12 should not come as a surprise. Like a chameleon, the nose ranges from citrus fruits, charcoal and hints of brine to farmland, ginger and band-aid. On the palate, the crisp and herbal arrival is followed by drying oak spices, lemon candies and just the right amount of peat, all very dense and spirit-driven. White pepper, chamomile and a dash of salt introduce the long and savory finish, lingering on with soot, tobacco and fresh mint. Load up the truck while you can!

Nosing:
The nose is slightly smoky, its clear this is a light peat treatment. Sweetness, caramel and citrus peel. Some maritime saltiness.
Taste:
Full body, sweet arrival, smokiness comes through, but isn't overpowering. Oak spiciness comes through, along with a big hit of black pepper. Salty towards the end.
Finish:
Lingering spiciness and smoke, nice mix of sweet and salt
Comment:
I came across this as I'm doing a run on 12 year old malts I haven't had yet. This one is an absolute gem. I will say though that it needs a little time after opening the bottle for it to settle down. Initially I was getting a lot of leather and menthol on the nose and the palate was a bit disjointed, but after a few days this went away. It also benefits a great deal from a bit of water, not a lot, maybe a teaspoon or so. I like level of the peat in this whisky, enough to be noticeable but not enough to strip 5 layers off your tongue. The saltiness also is a pleasant surprise, I like the maritime notes, and they're quite pronounced in this release.
The quality for the price on this one is absolutely outstanding, definitely one I'd recommend trying.

Nosing:
this is a fresh neck pour, so maybe the alchol is coming off strongish, but it's there. not as much smoke as i had anticipated. actually much more balanced than what i had read, and honestly more grassy/floral, more depth than what i expected.
Taste:
light smokiness for me compared to the Islay's, more
which is carrying lots of flavor
there is a lot going on here
Finish:
Comment: Overall much more than i expected. not as peated as i had anticipated, but very well balanced, and with this rich oily mouthfeel that I have heard about, I have not experienced at this price point. This is tasty on a lot of levels, and is not a "bomb" in one way or the other, but balanced and complex. More on the fruity side, but you can sit with it for quite some time and pick out different notes.
