Milam & Greene

The Milam & Greene distillery team around Master Distiller Marlene Holmes is based in Blanco, Texas. In contrast to Kentucky, where Whiskey has been produced since 1700, Texas has only been active in the Whiskey business for a short time. But precisely because there is no long history and therefore no rigid rules, there is greater scope for innovation.

Details about the Distillery

The Whiskey

The distillery is located in the picturesque town of Blanco in the Texas Hill Country, around 80 kilometres from Austin. In this region, four seasons can occur within a week, which has an effect on the maturation process of the Whiskey. The warm climate and strong temperature fluctuations ensure that the Whiskey absorbs the flavours of the wood more intensively. This gives the Hill Country Whiskey its special flavour.

The Milam & Greene Single Barrel is part of the distillery's Core Range and is bottled from a single barrel, resulting in approximately 280 bottles. The barrel number, the alcohol content in per cent by volume and the alcohol content in American proof are handwritten on each label. Milam & Greene releases the Single Barrel both at 43% vol. and at cask strength with 52.5% vol.

For the Milam & Greene Rye Port Wine Cask Finish, the distillery brings Indiana Rye Whiskey to Texas. There it is bottled and matured in old port wine barrels. The Milam & Greene Very Small Batch matures in French oak barrels and is only released twice a year. Even though each batch has slight differences, the distillery aims to achieve a similar flavour profile.

The Production

The team around Master Distiller Marlene Holmes not only distils at Milam & Greene's main site in Blanco, Texas. Distillation also takes place in Bardstown, Kentucky. The mash is made up of 70% corn, 22% malted rye and 8% barley.

In 2023, a 1,000-gallon Vendome copper still was installed as part of an expansion of the distillery in Blanco. This will be used in addition to the existing 300-gallon pot still. This and other expansions will enable production to be increased to over 1,000 barrels per year.

The Warehouses

Milam & Greene Whiskey is stored in three US states. However, the final maturation, blending and bottling take place in Texas.

Milam & Greene was one of the first distilleries to blend vintage straight Bourbon with Bourbon from very young barrels. In addition to using Whiskeys of very different ages, the distillery also blended Whiskey from different distilleries and different types of stills. In 2019, they released the Triple Cask Bourbon, which contains Bourbon Whiskey from three US states: Texas Bourbon from a 300-gallon pot still, Kentucky Whiskey from a column still with continuous distillation and old Tennessee Whiskey.

The History

Heather Greene, CEO and Master Blender, discovered her love of Whisky in Scotland, where she moved in 2005. She initially worked as a bartender there before joining the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Together with Marsha Milam, the two women founded Milam & Greene in 2019. The third woman in the team is Master Distiller Marlene Holmes, who can look back on many years of experience in the Whiskey industry in Kentucky.

The Visitor Centre

Whiskeys from the Milam & Greene range can be tasted at the distillery on the outskirts of Blanco. Spirits and cocktails are available in the tasting room and, in good weather, outside under the big old oak tree.
