Details about the Distillery

The Whisky

Hakushu's Single Malt Whisky is made from 100% roasted malt. It is slightly smoky with herbal notes. The standard range includes a 12-year-old, an 18-year-old and a 25-year-old Hakushu Single Malt. In addition, the distillery produces a Hakushu Distiller's Reserve.

The Production

Hakushu Whisky is produced using a combination of traditional Japanese techniques and modern methods. The distillery has 820,000 square metres of land at its disposal for this purpose.

An important part of the production process is the water, which is crucial for the production of Whisky. The water used for Hakushu comes from the surrounding mountains and is particularly rich in natural minerals. It is naturally filtered and has a very low lime content. The quality is so good that Suntory also bottles its water, which is famous in Japan, here.

The History

The Hakushu distillery was opened in 1973 in the Yamanashi Mountains on Mount Kaikomagatake in Japan and belongs to Beam Suntory, a leading company in the Japanese spirits industry.

The history of the Hakushu distillery begins in the 1970s, when Suntory decided to open a second Whisky distillery to meet the demand for Japanese Whisky. The site was chosen in the Yamanashi Mountains, which are known for their clean and pure water.

The Visitor Centre

The distillery has a visitor centre with a Whisky museum, shop, bar and restaurant. In addition, there is a beautiful view over the surrounding countryside from a viewing tower above the distillery, where you can also find a wilderness adventure trail. Guided tours are offered, even in English, which can be booked online. On the distillery's website, you can take a 360° tour of the Hakushu distillery.
