Gin Mare
Gin Mare is produced in a former 13th century chapel. The distillery is located on the property of the Destilerías Miquel Guansé just a few kilometres south of Barcelona on the Spanish coast. As the name suggests, it is mainly maritime aromas that give Gin Mare its flavour.

The Gin
The classic Gin Mare Mediterranean Gin is made with typical botanicals from the Mediterranean. The main ingredient is the so-called Arbequina olive, for which the Catalonia region around Barcelona is known worldwide. It is the most important variety for olive oil production, but also makes this Gin aromatically Mediterranean. Other botanicals from the Mediterranean region are Italian basil, Greek rosemary and thyme from Turkey. Oranges and lemons from Seville and Valencia provide fruity notes in the Gin. In addition to the essential juniper berries, spicy coriander and green cardamom are also included. The four Mediterranean ingredients olives, rosemary, thyme and basil also form the basis for the Gin Mare Capri, but the variation is also refined with bergamots from Calabria and lemons from Capri. The acidity of the main ingredient, Arbequina olives, changes every year, so each batch of Gin Mare tastes slightly different.
The Production
Gin Mare is distilled in the small distillery in a copper still. The so-called "Mediterranean method of production" requires that all botanicals are macerated individually and then distilled. Thus, the producers soak the juniper berries, olives, rosemary, thyme and basil as well as citrus fruits, cardamom and coriander in the new make, each individually for several hours. In the next step, each of the ingredients is distilled separately with the spirit. Then the individual flavoured spirits are blended to create a Gin.
History
The Giró family has been producing Liqueurs since 1835 and has been active in Wine trade, obviously in a Wine region like Penedés, Catalonia. At the end of the 19th century, they also started distilling Brandy and Whisky. The idea to produce Gin came to Manuel Giró Senior during the Spanish Civil War, when he sought shelter in the mountains and found large quantities of juniper bushes. In 1940, the Gin MG was finally introduced to the market. Marc and Manuel Giró Junior, the grandsons of Manuel Senior, are now the fourth generation to continue the distilling dynasty. However, they also wanted to contribute their own part to the family business and so developed their Mediterranean Gin from regional ingredients. Since the two had big plans for their Gin, but lacked the necessary marketing know-how, they teamed up with Global Premium Brands, splitting the company shares 50/50 with the spirits group. While the brothers concentrate on their speciality, distilling Gins, Global Premium Brands takes over the packaging and marketing part.
