Arehucas
The Arehucas distillery was founded in 1884 on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria. Back then, under the name ‘Fábrica de San Pedro’, it began producing high-quality Rum in addition to sugar. Today, Arehucas is proud to be recognised as an official ‘Purveyor to the Royal House and Court of Spain’, a title that underlines the quality and tradition of the Rum distillery.

The Rum
The Arehucas Rum distillery is located just 20 kilometres from the capital Las Palmas in the picturesque village of Arucas. The name ‘Arehucas’ comes from this place, where the distillery originated. The best-known bottlings from the traditional distillery are the Arehucas Ron Club 7 years and the Arehucas Añejo Reserva Rum 12 years. The Ron Club matures for seven years in oak barrels, which gives it a balanced, rich flavour structure. The Añejo Reserva Rum matures for 12 years in American oak barrels, developing an unmistakable depth and complexity.
The Production
Arehuca's Rum is distilled from fermented molasses and combines traditional and modern distillation techniques. The distillery uses both continuous and discontinuous distillation processes to create different styles of Rum. This combination of experience and innovation enables Arehucas to produce an impressive variety of Rums that are appreciated worldwide.
The Sugar Cane
The sugar cane for Arehucas Rum is grown on an area of around three hectares near the distillery. Other fields are located in Pozo Isquierdo in the south of Gran Canaria. The mild climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and the fertile soil on the Canary Islands provide ideal conditions for growing sugar cane. These natural advantages result in a raw material with a particularly high sugar content, which forms the basis for the exceptional flavour of Arehucas Rum.
The Warehouse
The Arehucas distillery is home to one of the oldest Rum cellars in Europe. Around 6,000 American oak barrels are stored here, giving the Rum an unmistakable complexity. Some of these barrels even bear the signatures of famous personalities such as Plácido Domingo and Willy Brandt. Storage takes place in a historic vaulted cellar, which creates ideal conditions for the Rum to mature: constant temperatures and high humidity ensure that the flavours develop slowly and evenly. Arehucas produces around 3.5 million bottles of Rum every year, which are enjoyed all over the world.
The History
The history of Arehucas begins in 1884 with the founding of the ‘Fábrica de San Pedro’ sugar factory in Arucas. In addition to sugar production, the factory also produced sugar cane distillates and Rum, which quickly became popular. A few years later, the company achieved the status of purveyor to the court of the Spanish royal family. In 1909, Arehucas acquired a state-of-the-art distillation plant from Paris in order to further improve quality. Arehucas was also able to survive the crisis years of the 20th century largely unscathed.
The brand name ‘Ron Arehucas’ was introduced in the 1940s. Today, a statue at the entrance to the distillery commemorates the visionary Alfredo Martín Reyes, who was instrumental in shaping the brand. In 1965, the name ‘Fábrica de San Pedro’ was changed to ‘Destilerías Arehucas’. With the acquisition of Fábrica de Licores Artemi, the company continued to grow and became the largest spirits group in the Canary Islands. In addition to Arehucas Rum, the group also distributes Carmela Gin and Ron Artemi.
The Visitor Centre
Every year, the Arehucas distillery welcomes over 95,000 visitors who take the opportunity to visit the historic Rum Cellar and have a look behind the scenes of production. After the tour, visitors can sample different types of Rum and purchase their favourite bottle in the shop. A unique experience for Rum lovers and those who want to become one!
