The Taketsuru 21 appears to be a veritable bargain as it is quite available at $150 compared to the $180+ of a Yamazaki 18.

Unfortunately, Taketsuru also appears to be the "weakest" of the Nikka Single Malt line-up. This particular 21 appears slightly tired and restrained, with dark cereal, walnut and toffee notes. The signature "vanillin" quality of other Nikkas is entirely absent.
The palate merely mimics the nose with mellow malt and confectionery qualities, evolving into a lightly earthy smoke on the finish.

Even though no other Nikkas of this age are reliably available in export markets, their other offerings such as Yoichi 17 or even the Coffey grain eclipse this tired Taketsuru.
Quite a pity considering that this 21 year-old is meticulously made, but just lacks character compared to other Nikkas or other Japanese Malts in this price range.
