Glenfarclas 12 Years

The character of this malts is sweetish and delicately smoky with a hefty onion. It softens with water and the sherry unfolds. There is some smoke in the taste. The finish is medium long. In metal tin!

Nosing: Sherry Raisin Orange Pineapple Caramel
A bit hit of sherry and raisin. Orange peel and fresh pineapple juice. Caramel sweetness. Very aromatic, lacks a little of the complexity of older versions - which is to be expected, but very good nonetheless.

Taste: Sherry Caramel Dried Fruit Oak Malt
Intense sweet sherry arrival. Remains fairly intensely flavoured throughout. Dried fruits and dark caramel (almost, but not quite bitter). Malty, and oaky, but not overly spicy.

Finish: Sherry Oak Alcohol
Long and oaky, lots of sherry still. A little alcohol zing at the start which isn't there in the older version.

Comment:
Having had the 15 year old multiple times I thought I'd check out the 12 year old Glenfarclas to see how it compares. Its a little rougher round the edges than its big brother, but if you're a fan of sherried malts there's a lot to like. About the only thing that I don't like is the little alcohol nip in the tail end, but to be honest, for the price and other qualities on show I can easily overlook it. I think I found it at about £30 in M&S which makes it an absolute steal compared to a lot of malts which I think show considerably less character at the £40 mark.
