Nosing:
Intense big hit of sherry and raisins. Mixed nuts, orange peel. Fresh apricot. Intensely aromatic.
Taste:
Sweet to balanced arrival. Where the nose is more fresh fruit, this has a lot more dried fruit character. Sultanas, dried apricot, dried citrus fruit (lime?). There's an immediate oak spiciness which builds over time that has a peppery character.
Finish:
Medium to long. Dark dried fruit and dark chocolate. There's something a bit herbal in there too like bay leaf maybe. Relatively dry finish
Comment:
This is a really good example of an older sherry finished malt. The nose is beautiful. The palate is intense and layered. The finish is good, maybe not as good as the nose and palate, but is still characterful and interesting. One thing that sticks out is that for 18 years, it's still quite a lively tasting whisky. Normally by this age things are starting to lose their vibrancy a little, but here it is still definitely present. Shows best with a good drop of water. Definitely a buy.
