As coastal malt from the Northern Highlands, Old Pulteney 12 is unlike many other whiskies: it's not made to be 'pleasant'. What you get is a demanding flavor profile, strength of character and true personality. On the nose, there is a complex bouquet of bitter honey, tropical fruits, fresh ginger and hints of sea salt. The taste alternates between caramel sweetness, orange zest and savory notes before the oak kicks in and leads to a moderate, herbal crisp and rather dry finish. A rewarding Single Malt that requires time, perseverance and a bit of experience!

Nosing: Fruit Pear Melon Lemon Sweet
A fruit led nose, with melon, pear and fresh citrus juice. Also sweetness.

Taste: Caramel Fruit Salt Apple Pear
Sweet and fruity arrival. Stewed fruit, pear and apple. A salty tang and a slight bitter/sour note develops.

Finish: Oak Salt
Medium length, dry and oaky.

Comment:
This is one of those whiskys I'm coming back to after a long gap. Its much sweeter than I remember it, maybe a little more so than I'm comfortable with. Its generally good stuff, but there's an off note on the palate where it gets a bit bitter and artificial when the oak kicks in. Other than that, nothing really to complain about. It isn't really to my personal taste but perfectly serviceable.

Nosing: strong honey

Taste: complex and oily. Quite bitter arrival but then the taste is salty, maritime, a bit spicy and oaky.

Finish: Develop and stay for a long time. Is complex and pleasant. What stay on a tangue remind me a nice, strong bear aftertaste.

Comment: It is quite unique whisky. Worthy to call it a maritime malt. But still not one of my favourite. Nice and complex but not for someone who like peat or strong taste drams.

Taste: Maritime Notes Salt Caramel Banana Pineapple Lemon Orange very funky

Finish: Orange Oak Oil

Comment:In the same family I've always felt as Oban and Clynelish, but a bit fruitier I reckon now that I'm sitting down with it. I've always like these malts as they stand out on their own and aren't trying to emulate anything else. Definitely one of those whisky's that evolve as you work your way through the bottle, as I remember pouring the first glass and get MAJOR mineral notes, a lot more Iodine than I'm getting now.
