I don't know why, but it took me years to appreciate Highland Park. Thanks to the persistence of a friend, I finally do. My personal interpretation is two-fold:
1.) Highland Park embodies everything that most Scotch Blends try (and fail) to accomplish: slight peat, big fruit, noticeable oak contribution, initially sweet, but structured development.
2.) Even though they claim Sherry cask dominance, the nose always initially suggests Bourbon to me. Overt caramel, slight Ethyl-Acetate, sometimes a little Di-Methyl-Disulfide, occasionally pungent alcohol.

All that said, even the regular 12Y (at the export market 43% ABV) is a very satisfying dram. The honey and tropical fruit are there - the distillery calls it pineapple, I often associate passion fruit. The peat is quite muted and herbal on the nose.
The sweet front-palate quickly gives way to oaky, peaty, malty and bitter structure, which persists into the finish.

Oddly enjoyable, probably a good "consensus" taste profile.

Nosing: fresh and clean, orange, sherry of course, light vanilla but not vanilla bean, more like wafting extract that you feel on the mouth when nosing.

Taste: sweet and oaky, surprisingly great after a what I thought was a thorough nosing. It's another one of those bottles that will eventually be hard to find and or price out the average buyer.

Finish: long but clean when done.

Comment: Love it.

First bottle of Highland Park 12. Fairly new to scotch drinking and picked this up based on some reviews I read. The very first glass out of the bottle was a bit harsh. I let it sit for a week or so. Im on my third dram and I'm really starting to enjoy it. I get butterscotch on the nose and I really like the slight smoke. The finish is starting to become very smooth. Enjoying it more and more with every sip.
