With its combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, The Hielan' offers a nice twist to the GlenDronach theme. Thumbs up for the age statement! On the nose, fresh fruits, butterscotch and beeswax are interwoven with vanilla, cinnamon and hints of thyme. Punchy, crisp and spirit-driven, the palate takes over with citrus-honey, pepper and a touch of arugula. A gentle hug from the casks appears towards the finish, leaving behind a nutty/grassy aftertaste. Although I do prefer the sherry monsters, this young malt qualifies for a perfect everyday dram.

Butter shortbread. Vanilla, citrus peel. Some light clove. Fudge and milk chocolate. Intensely aromatic. Buttered popcorn

Taste: VanillaSweetRaisinDried Fruit
Intense flavour. Sweet arrival with bags of vanilla. Remains relatively sweet throughout. Develops into Raisin and dark dried fruit,

Finish: Dried FruitOakGinger
Residual dried fruit. Black tea. Ginger heat. Drying over time

Comment:
On the nose this comes across as a very bourbon wood influenced whisky. There's so much butteriness and vanilla, and very intense. On the palate however, the sherry cask really picks up the slack. It has a deep dried fruit flavour like PX or the filling in an eccles cake. The finish is long and balances out the palate with some much needed dryness and fiery ginger like heat. This is definitely one to try if you get the chance. It isn't subtle by any means, it really slaps you around with the flavours, but for the price it's an excellent buy.
