Nosing:
Sweet nuts. Hazelnut, sweet chestnut. Lots of caramel. Some citrus peel showing through.
Taste:
Sweet arrival. Nutty caramel, vanilla. Just a bit of spiciness if you hold it in your mouth.
Finish:
Sweet and with a vanilla caramel note a little wood spice. Not particularly long
Comment:
I'm a fan of Bunnahabhain, the 12 year old is a good everyday sherried malt (even if it is a bit rowdy lately). This one however is showing its age badly. Its full of that vanilla caramel that really young malts display. If it wasn't for the nuttiness, I'd think it had been matured in ex bourbon casks, the vanilla is that strong. The nose is actually pretty good, but on the palate and finish it isn't great. The finish especially is short and uneventful. I'd say that this can't be much older than 4 years or so. At least its bottled at 46, but that isn't enough to save it for me. My main complaint with it though is that it is priced so similarly to the 12 year old. I picked this up at a local supermarket, and noted that I've seen the 12 year old for the same price in the area not long ago. Bit of a miss on this one.
