This a really nice complex nose. Initially malt and fruit with a bit of sweet pears. Christmas cake, lots of dried fruit. Black coffee and brandy cream like you get at christmas. In the background there's a very light wood smoke. Superb
Taste:
Balanced arrival and slightly sweet, full bodied throughout. This is much more simple than the nose, but enjoyable nonetheless. Black pepper and chocolate are the predominant flavours.
Finish:
Long and intense. Dark chocolate, mixed spices. A slight oily smokiness. Some oak showing through.
Comment:
I'd never had this version of JW and I've not really liked some of their other releases in the past. I'm not a fan of that oily graininess you get in grain whisky, but thought I'd give this a shot since it's all malt. I have to say I'm super impressed. The nose is great and shows really well. On the palate it's intense and well rounded. The finish is long and warming. I've seen some reviews which said that the pepperiness was acrid and overpowering but I don't see it in the bottle I got. Perhaps it's something that they have worked out with newer batches. The price is comparable to a lot of higher end supermarket malts but the quality leaves some of them in the dust. Great stuff.

Off the bat, there's a weird fake vanilla thing going on. Apple and white grape, general sweetness. Some light smokiness. Not as good as I remember from the past. The smokiness is more identifiably peaty.
Taste:
Sweet, reasonably intense arrival. Spiciness and smokiness builds over time. Some light tongue tongue burning towards the end.
Finish:
A continuation of the palate flavours, but short.
Comment:
I don't know what it is that has changed about the green label in the last couple of years, but it definitely isn't as good as I remember it. It still carries the 15 year age statement, but it feels like there's a lot more fresh bourbon cask influence than there used to be. It has that buttery fake vanilla character now that you get in very young NAS whisky, which I could do without. Don't get me wrong, the blending brings enough smokiness and other character that it isn't awful, I just remember it being a lot better than this. Shame.
