This sherry-heavy Macallan 12 in the American market bottling at 43% ABV may be one of the remaining "value" propositions of the line-up.
The sheer amount of first-fill Sherry maturation is immediately apparent by the color and dominates in every regard. The nose is all dried-fruit and dark candied sugar notes, while the distillery character is merely contributing a little pungency of fusels.
Similarly on the palate, the oily structure is further enhanced by a big Sherry sweetness immediately evoking Sultanas again. A slight astringency, spice and bitterness from the (European?) oak is quite noticeable, but nicely contributes to the finish of graphite and dark fruits.
Remarkably, this bottling is still closer to $50 than to $100, which makes it a "value" for Macallan. The new "Distiller's Edition" tries to emulate the style in color and aroma, but greatly falls short on the palate. (It is much drier, with more tannin and younger alcohol masking what little sweetness may be present.)
