This Macallan 25Y appears quite distinct from other Macallan standard bottlings nowadays and bears resemblance to the heavily sherried Macallans of the 1960s/70s.

It is an incredibly layered, dark and Sherry-driven Malt that balances the richest of Sherry qualities with noble aged qualities found in other great spirits of this age. Layer upon layer of aromas inspires memories of dried flowers, mixed nuts, fragrant fresh and dried fruits, as well as exotic spices, chocolate, coffee and exotic woods.

The palate is what Macallan has always been know for, an oily, richly layered texture with almost Pumpernickel-like maltiness and fine, powdery tannins reminding of cocoa.

The finish is brilliantly intense and long compared to most other contemporary Macallans.

Undisputedly a great malt - just not worth its current $800 going rate per bottle. However, it can still be found for $25-35 for a generous serving in many upscale bars and restaurants, and it is entirely worth that commitment.
