For everyone with some experience with smoky Islay whiskies, which currently available bottles would you recommend?
It would depend, of course, of taste and budget.
For a starting experience, I would recommend the core ones:
From this starting point, it would depend on what do you enjoy the most, in order to select the next ones.
Vasco lists the definitive core "official bottlings", also check out Caol Ila 12 and Port Charlotte 10 for a slightly different smokiness then the Port Ellen distillery cluster in the south of Islay...Bunnahaiban and Kilhoman also produce some quality smoky whisky...some independent bottlers like Cadenhead, Gordon and Macphail and Signatory put out some great bottlings of Caol Ila
For smoky whiskies that are a bit lighter than Bowmore 12 yo is a good choice.
For more bonfire smoke whiskies I suggest Ardbeg 10yo.
For more medicinal smoke I recommend 10yo Laphroaig or 16 yo Lagavulin.
look out for Laphroaig PX Cask and Quarter Cask
Hello Ian I would recommend Ledaig 10, Bowmore 12, Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 16 if you willing to spend a little extra. Good luck with your choice.
@Vasco I have tried Lagavulin 16 and Laphroaig 10 and by a bit preferred Lagavulin 16. Are there any higher end or niche smoky whiskies that you would recommend that are similar to Lagavulin?
@A.Shafner Thanks! My favorite is Lagavulin 16
Ardgeb 10 and laga 16
If you haven't tried smoky scotch before, you may may want to start with a light or medium peated whisky before moving on to the heavily peated whiskies. With this in mind, a good light to medium entry level peaty scotches would be from light to heavier:
Highland Park 12
Caol Isla 12
Heavy peats are:
@Markscotchcrazed Thank you! I am quite impressed with Lagavulin 16
