Rum is a distillate made from sugar cane. Most often the molasses, the waste product of sugar production, is used. There are also varieties made from sugar cane juice.
Rum is associated with the Caribbean, beach and sunshine. First mentions are found in the 17th century. Barbados is home to the oldest rum distillery. The word rum is probably derived from the dialect word 'rumbullion', which means 'drink made from sugar cane stalks'. Or perhaps it comes from the word 'rumbustion', which means 'turmoil'?
