Old Pulteney Port: Second Edition of the Coastal Series
A finish in port wine casks for intense fruit notes
With the Coastal Series, the Pulteney Distillery from Wick presents limited editions that were finished in casks from coastal regions of the world. While the first edition of the series was finished in French Pineau des Charentes casks, the focus of the second bottling is now on port casks: The Old Pulteney Port was initially matured in 2nd-fill ex-bourbon casks and then got its special aromatic accent through a finish in port casks from the Douro Valley in Northern Portugal.
This single malt perfectly combines heat and cold, i.e. the soft and intense fruit of port with the typical maritime-mineral character of Old Pulteney, as the press release of distributor Eggers & Franke explains. The Old Pulteney Port was bottled at 46% ABV. We can expect two more editions of the Coastal Series, they have been announced for 2024 and 2025.
Tasting notes for the Old Pulteney Port
Colour: rose gold with peach reflections
Aroma: sweet, pickled sultanas, vanilla butter and candied orange peel, maybe even a little gingerbread. With time, cherry notes, marzipan and dark chocolate are added for a certain aromatic depth.
Taste: On the palate, the Old Pulteney Port presents itself sweet and spicy. It is reminiscent of baked apple, caramel and juicy cinnamon buns. On the second or third sip, one recognises vanilla pudding with a hint of rose water and the mineral-maritime note so typical of Old Pulteney.
Finish: The finish is a delicate blend of fruit, warm spices and sweet plum jam.
