The Illusionist

The Illusionist distillery has become known for its organically produced Gin, which is a real master of metamorphosis. The blue colour is only an illusion, because if you add tonic water, the Gin takes on a light pink colour. Since 2023, the distillery has also been producing the Sentinel Rum.

Details about the Distillery

The Gin

The deep blue The Illusionist Dry Gin scores with a special feature: if you mix it with tonic water, it turns from blue to pink. The distillery uses 16 botanicals from all over the world in organic quality for its Gin, such as mace for an earthy-spicy note, liquorice, fruity citrus peel, angelica root, cardamom, chamomile, cranberries, ginger, lavender and lemongrass. The Gin gets its bright blue colour due to the addition of a mysterious blue flower from the Far East that reacts to acid. The black bottles with art nouveau labels contain 45% alcohol.

The Rum

Since 2023, The Illusionist distillery has also been producing The Sentinel Scented Rum alongside the well-known Gin. For this, young Rum is sourced from Paraguay, which is matured at the distillery in flamed oak barrels as well as Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Meanwhile, an 'acoustic aging' is carried out, in which sounds create acoustic waves, which is supposed to accelerate the maturation process of the spirit.

Each Rum is accompanied by a small bottle containing a Cocktail Scent, hence the Sentinel's name affix. This scent can be sprayed over the filled glass for additional flavouring.

The Production

The founders of the Illusionist Distillery are keen to use organically grown products that are sourced from regional suppliers. Besides the botanicals, the base of wheat distillate is also 100% organic. In addition, the harvest is delayed until the raw materials have reached the optimum degree of ripeness. This also leads to slight seasonal variations in taste, which make each batch a little different.

The Gin is distilled at the Illusionist Distillery on the first still with hand-made coolers made of laboratory glass, as well as on a traditional pot still made of copper. In this, the 95 percent wheat distillate with the various botanicals is heated, slowly evaporated and cooled. The Gin is not chill-filtered in order to preserve and enhance the full aroma. Only after distillation is the special flower finally added, which gives its blue colour and slightly floral notes to the spirit before it is removed again.

The History

The idea for Illusionist Dry Gin was born in 2015 in the middle of the Glockenbachviertel in Munich. The two long-time friends Max Muggenthaler and Tim Steglich realised their dream of producing high-quality Gin and thus turned their passion into their (second) profession.
