Details about the Distillery

Whiskies

Mackmyra Distillery used to work in an old mill and stopped production in 2011. The new distillery called Mackmyra Gravity started without delay. Today there are Whiskies from both distilleries on the market. The speciality of the distillery is the maturation of Whisky in small casks with a content of only 30 liters. These small casks result in an extremely fast maturation.

There are some standard bottles like Bruks, The 1st Edition, and the peated Svensk Rök available. They are accompanied by a steadily changing assortment of bottles from different casks.

Production

The Gravity Distillery is built in a new 7 stories tall tower made of concrete. The ingredients are transported to the top of the tower from which they flow with the gravity down to the basement where the raw Whisky is finally filled in the casks. The newly built Malt Whisky distillery is one of the most automated Whisky plants in the world. But the heart of the distillery consists of two Scottish copper pot stills.

The Stills

The Stills were fabricated by Forsythes in the Scottish town of Rothes. They have medium size and the form is very classical with a narrow neck. There are no constrictions or reflux bowls so that the Whisky does not loose the original taste acquired during bewing.

The Mash Bill

Mackmyra produces its own smoked barley on site in an old building which used to be part of an ammunition plant. There are two huge silos which contain unpeated and peated barley. The mixture between both sorts can be adjusted steplessly. They produce typically peatless as well as lightly smoked and heavily smoked Whiskies.

The Warehouses

Mackmyra Gravity has a concrete warehouse on site, which was especially built to mature Whisky in the extreme Swedish climate. This warehouse may be cooled in extreme summers. But Mackmyra matures its Whiskies completely different to all other distilleries worldwide. The Whisky is spread over more than half a dozen warehouses which are not only located in Sweden but also in other countries. The locations are also very scenic. There are as well an old castle, a tiny island, and a warehouse in the icy climate of a mountain in the north of Sweden.

History

The idea of producing Whisky in Sweden came to life in 1998. The first Whisky was distilled in 1999 and in 2000, the first small 30 liter cask was filled. The first Whisky was sold 2002.

Mackmyra changed the place of distillation in late 2011 and opened its Gravity distillery near Gävle 100 mi. north of the Swedish capital Stockholm.

The Visitor Centre

The new distillery has a nice visitor's center which is completely handicapped-suited. On top of the distillery tower which houses an escalator lies a tasting room with a wonderful overview of the area just to the town of Gävle and the Baltic Sea.
