Details about the Distillery

The Whisky

The distillery's first product, Makar Glasgow Gin, was launched in 2014. Until its first Whisky is bottled, the Glasgow distillery sells the award-winning Prometheus Whisky, a 26-year-old, 27-year-old and 28-year-old Speyside Single Malt. This is purchased from another distillery, but bottled and sold by the Glasgow distillery.

The first Single Malt from the distillery was launched in 2018, showing fruity notes of pears, rhubarb and custard in the flavour with a slightly peppery finish.

The Production

The distillery uses special copper stills, produced in Germany and named after family members of the three founders “Annie”, “Mhairi” and “Tara”. The spirit is stored in port, sherry and Madeira casks at the Glasgow Distillery.

Two more stills were added in August 2019, “Margaret” and “Frances”. They are exact copies of the existing stills. This doubled the annual production volume from 220,000 litres to 440,000 litres.

The History

In the 18th century, Glasgow was a flourishing trading centre. In 1770, the original Glasgow distillery was built in Dundashill and taken over by the Glasgow Distillery Company in 1825. In 1899, a column still was installed to increase production and efficiency. Despite this expansion, the distillery was unable to survive on the market and had to close in 1903.

In 2012, the Glasgow Distillery Company was re-established, making it the first new distillery in the city for over 100 years. The stills were installed in 2014 and production of Glasgow Whisky began in the same year.

The Visitor Centre

The Glasgow distillery can be visited. Guided tours are offered in conjunction with Tennent's Brewery, where the tour starts at their visitor centre in the Wellpark Brewery. You will then travel to the Glasgow distillery for a guided tasting tour, including Makar Gin and the distillery's upcoming 2018 Single Malt Whisky.
