The Whisky
The Balcones Whisky have quite a big range of traditional American Whiskys. The Whiskies are well balanced and of good quality. The distillery experiments a bit with new ingredients like the Hopi blue corn meal and succeeds quite good with them.
The Production
The distillery is located in the heart of Texas and in the production, among other things, handmade pot stills are used. In addition to Bourbon, Balcones also produces Single Malt, Straight Corn and Rye.
The Pot Stills
The stills of Balcones are pot stills which are very round at the base. There is no constricting piece or reflux bowl above the intermediate piece. Although the construction of the the neck is very tall and lets the alcohols separate very nicely. In addition the the lyne arm is rising after the bent above the neck.
The Warehouse
They varies with the barrels. They uses the traditional oak casks as well as many other smaller casks. The smaller casks have a better wood/volume ratio, which allows the Whisky to mature even more intensively. Due to the quite changeable climate in the southern states, the Whiskies mature quite quickly in their casks.
The History
Balcones was founded in 2008 and began distilling in 2009. The original distillery, built mostly by hand, existed until 2015. In early 2016, the building that had long served as a barrel warehouse became the new home of Balcones.
The Visitor Center
The tours at the distillery can only be made with special appointments. You have to call the distillery beforehand.
