The Whisky
The distillery sources the barley for the Aber Falls Whisky locally from Welsh farms. This means that the distillery produces very regionally and supports the local economy at the same time. Aber Falls is also allowed to label its Whisky with the protected designation of origin ‘Single Malt Welsh Whisky’. This relatively new geographical designation has been available to Wales since 24 July 2023 and applies exclusively to Single Malt. The strong reference to Wales can also be found on the label on the neck of the bottle. The dragon of the Welsh flag is printed here.
The Aber Falls River, the Afon Rhaeadr Fawr, from which the Aber Falls Distillery draws its water, flows right next to the distillery.
The Aber Falls Single Malt Welsh Whisky is matured in a combination of two different Sherry casks (PX and Oloroso), Bourbon and fresh white oak casks and is bottled at 40% vol.
The Gin
The distillery uses botanicals from all over North Wales and water from the Snowdon Mountains for its Gin. In addition to the classic Dry Gin, an Aber Falls Welsh Gin Orange Marmalade and an Aber Falls Welsh Gin Rhubarb & Ginger are also produced.
The Production
The building in which Aber Falls now produces Whisky served as a slate factory in the 19th century and later housed a margarine factory and a warehouse for the wholesale beverage trade.
The distillery focusses on sustainability in its production. Only locally grown ingredients are used and by-products from the production process are recycled. Local farmers receive the leftovers from the pot ale as fertiliser and the draff as animal feed.
The Warehouses
Aber Falls uses American white oak, virgin oak and Spanish Sherry casks for maturation. Storage takes place directly at the distillery in Abergwyngregyn, on the shores of the Menai Strait.
The History
The Aber Falls Distillery was founded in 2017 in the village of Abergwyngregyn, which translates as ‘mouth of the river of white shells’. The first bottles of Single Malt Whisky came onto the market in May 2021. The distillery is owned by Halewood Artisanal Spirits, a company based in England. The independent spirits producer operates other Whisky, Gin and a Rum distillery as well as various bars.
The Visitor Centre
The distillery has a visitor centre with a café and offers tours where you can learn all about the production of Aber Falls Single Malt Welsh Whisky and also taste it. A ‘Gin Lab Experience’ can also be booked online. Here, visitors can create their own Gin recipe.
