Orkney's second distillery is often overlooked for a reason: its small range of NAS expressions is poorly presented and shockingly expensive! Matured in first fill American oak, the nose of Scapa Skiren is gentle, creamy and citrusy with notes of pine needles, barley sugar and heather honey. Did you ever taste the Christmas tree? Resin and wood bitter flavors attack the palate with a dry kick, disrupted by hints of sweetness and Ricola cough drops. More bitterness, lemongrass and Earl Grey tea dominate the rather short finish. Back to Highland Park...

Comment: What a great whisky. Very complex, even though it is a NAS whisky. The aromas somewhat resemble a bourbon, which, I think, does make sense since this whisky was matured in the first-fill American oak casks. The nose is sweet and creamy with honey dominating, and the honey aroma reminds me the fresh honey just extracted from cells of a beehive. The palate is oaky and spicy at the beginning, but then it becomes fruity and sweet with notes of a baked red apple, cinnamon, honey and zesty citric fruit. The finish is oaky and nutty with a light grapefruit-like bitterness.
The fruity notes resemble not the ripe fruit, but rather a fruit pie or a cake. The official tasting notes say that there is a ginger on a palate, but I personally think that it is rather a zesty citric note. Anyway, I have enjoyed this whisky a lot, and I think it is very worth trying. Looking forward to trying the Scapa 16 years old))

Finish: Medium; mostly smooth with a little bite

Comment: To me, not terribly complex or peaty, but it is quite pleasant and accessible. Peppery and light.
