Such a distinctive spirit! Nikka Whisky has always fascinated me, and Yoichi remains my current favorite of their single Malts, especially the 17Y offering.

The malt character seems to combine rich, bright fruits (apricot, pineapple) and Sherry characteristics with the Nikka hallmark vanillin powder dusting. You are also always wondering if you are actually noticing the coal-fired distillation technique or not - there seems to be the tinies hint of smoke, but no peat.
On the palate, big up-front sweetness and the powerdery vanilla tannin (oak lactone?) structure dominate. Exquisitely rich and balanced.

Entirely unique, but fit to rival any Speyside. Bears a lot of stylistic resemblance to the "Coffey Still" offerings.
