In actuality this is probably more like a 3.5 star whisky for me, but I gave it the ol' round up for the sake of the branding.

Ah, Shackleton. I didn't go into the liquor store in search of this whisky, but I'd be a liar if I didn't claim I damn near sprung up and out of my skin when I saw this bottle poking out behind some Lagavulin 8. It wasn't that I had ever heard of this whisky, I just have a soft spot for anything remotely close to Antarctica. The marketed promise of it being a recreation of Shackleton's preferred booze really dulled the spontaneous sting of the purchase. And for round about $30 USD, this whisky isn't half bad.

It's an easy sipper, although here's something in the smoothness of the flavor that feels a bit... false. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's decided smoothness feels somehow unearned. But that's a vague, cryptic statement that I am unable to quantify with actual data or tasting comparisons.

Needless to say, I'm happy to have bought this. The packaging is slick and the bottle will be a keeper when empty thanks to the imprinted Shackleton quote on the reverse. I'm unsure if I would buy it again, but I suppose that's a question for when I'm on the other side of the bottle and under the table.

Comment: For a very modestly priced bottle this is a full, interesting, well rounded and smooth whisky. Dangerously good sipping with a silky / waxy mouth feel and a very satisfying lasting finish.
