What a magnificent, but rare bottle. Whoever had any doubt that Bruichladdich's "Black Art" contained Port pipe finishing needs to try this Whiskey.

As other reviewers, notably Ralfy, have mentioned, this is a busy Whiskey. The smoke component is mellow and distinctly on the coal and campfire side, again a nod to Bowmore IMHO.

The port aging is not as obvious as one would think and points me at rather spent "Tawny" or rather old "Ruby" barrels. Plums and pluots lead the way to more subtle honeysuckle notes. With time or water, the strong nuttiness of aged, non-vintage Ports appears - hazelnut, cashew, then green walnut.

The taste is sublimely textured with a lively alcohol and supporting tannin - that green walnut, again. Water brings out sweetness and mellowness, while the smoke comes in late. Not sure "sooty" is an apt description, but dark, carbonized smoke, for sure.

Layers upon layers; young, but just old enough.
