Laphroaig Select

Ian Hunter, the last of the founding family, visited the Bourbon distilleries in Kentucky around 70 years ago to learn their maturing techniques. Until that time, all barrels came from Europe, which resulted in a much sweeter Laphroaig. Hunter shipped a selection of ex-bourbon barrels to Scotland to test these barrels for his whiskey. This is the beginning of the Laphroaig as we know it.
The Select contains proportions of all known Laphroaig bottlings (10 years, PX Cask, Quarter Cask and Triple Wood). The combination of different barrels and bottlings creates a harmonious balance between peat smoke, vanilla, honey and slightly earthy aromas.

It's an interesting example. A non-age-statement Single Malt Whisky which is bottled at purely natural color and it matured in FIVE different types of casks: Ex-Oloroso Sherry Cask, ex-Pedro Ximenes Sherry Cask, New American Oak Cask (not ex-Bourbon), Quarter Cask and the first fill ex-Bourbon Cask. It's chill-filtered and bottled at 40% ABV. You can find numbers of different descriptions of that Whisky in the Net, which surprises me a little bit, because it's quite easy to check the infos.
Color: this is what makes me happy - beautiful, natural… pure gold
Nose: FANTASTIC! What a richness of beautiful aromas. That surprises me the most! It's absolutely not that what I suspected. I said to myself: “If it's going to be a typical Laphroaig… there will be SMOKE - first of all… then smoke… and after a while… maybe something more”. But definitely not in this particular case. There's plenty of different aromas. 5 types of casks did their job perfectly.
Marzipan, sherry, vanilla, peach, raisins, pears, bananas, sea breeze, forest air, bonfires, butterscotch. Here, the smokiness is rather untypical for Laphroaig - it's really sweet and aromatic! 24/25
Palate: bitter chocolate, smoke, caramel, ripe bananas, vanilla, maple syrup. Pleasant, very mild, a bit watery 21/25
Finish: cocoa, smoke, prunes, stewed apples, Sherry, yeasts, hay, rosemary. Rather short 19/25
Balance: right next to the nose, this is the best part of this Malt. Five great value casks. That certainly works! Very complex, light and delicate Whisky. Great value for the price (I bought it for 25€ in Netto, Germany). If it would be un-chill filtered, the finish would be definitely longer… but the natural color is certainly the strong point of this Whisky.
Recommended. Overall: 87/100

Nase: FANTASTISCH! So viel schönen Aromen.
Marzipan, Sherry, Vanille, Pfirsich, Rosinen, Birnen, Bananen, Meeresbrise, Waldluft, Lagerfeuer, Karamell-Sahnesoße. 24/25
Körper: Bitterschokolade, Rauch, Karamell, reife Bananen, Vanille, Ahornsirup. Angenehm, sehr mild, jedoch etwas wässrig 21/25
Finish: Kakao, Rauch, Pflaumen, gebackene Äpfel, Sherry, Hefe, Heu, Rosmarin. Eher kurz 19/25
Insgesamt: 87/100

Nosing: Peat Smoke Medicinal Smoke Vanilla Malt Salt Alcohol Sweet Spices

Taste: Peat Smoke Medicinal Smoke Salt Seaweed Spices Lemon Sweet

Finish: Peat Smoke Medicinal Smoke Malt Hay Honey Spices Sweet

Comment: Very peaty and medicinal aromas when it first comes to nosing, then there were some fruitiness and sweetness behind, with faint vanilla and malt notes. The palate was quite strong an thick, I would have thought it was more likely a 50% than a 43%. Intense peat and medicinal smokiness carried through and the aftertaste was long and wonderful.
