Lagavulin 16 Years

The classic Lagavulin is kilned with a high smoke content in the malt. The stills are pear-shaped, so that all flavors can be passed on to the condensers during distillation. The single malt then matures in bourbon and sherry casks to completion.

Nosing: Peat SmokeSweetWalnutVanilla
Immediately smoky. Not as intense as I was expecting, but welcome for it. Sweetness and vanilla. I smell walnuts in this though not many others seem to, and fennel or liquorice.

Taste: Peat SmokeSweetOil
Full and intense, sweet and smoky, oily mouth coating texture. some spiciness in the back of the mouth. There is a bit of fruitiness there, but you really have to go looking for it.

Finish: Peat SmokePepper
Long and smoky, black pepper.

Comment:
I went into this not knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised, the smoke is prevalent but not overpowering and the overall deep sweetness balances it out. The smoke is less medicinal and more like lapsang souchong tea (which I usually hate) but in this it definitely suits it. Good stuff.

Before I tried this, I had been thinking Lagavulin is one of the typical intense Iodine scotch whisky. But the impression was totally different from my expectation. The drum showed great mixture with Smoke, ionine and dried tropical fruits and oranges.
Currently, this drum is one of most my favorite whisky.

I dont find it smokey on the nose on the palate, I get a light peat/earthy taste.

Nosing: HUGE peat smoke, charcoal, earthiness

Taste: peat smoke, BBQ smoke and sweetness, iodine

Finish: medium - smoke, smoke, smoke, fading smoke

Comment: I'm not big into smoke and peat but when I'm in the mood, this is one of my go to's.
