Glenmorangie Spios

Glenmorangie Spios is the 9th bottling from the Private Edition and is influenced by the American Rye Whiskeys. Inspired by the golden Whiskey Era, in which herbs and spices travelled through the saloons, for the first time Ex-Rye casks from Kentucky were used for the maturation of the Malt. The name Spios is Gaelic for 'spices' and shows the spicy character even verbally.

Nosing: Vanilla vanilla cream soda Sweet Fruit Pineapple Kiwi Banana Green Apple ripe green fruit Rye

Taste: Vanilla on arrival then spicy fruitiness Spices Spices Pepper Fruit very intense spiciness more so than you expect from most scotch. More ripe fruit Banana Pineapple

Finish: Rye Banana Oak medium

Comment: This one is...different. It is a change of pace, not something I would reach for often. I would not pay some of the prices I see for this $100, i found this for $70 and even then it feels a bit steep. But rye casks maturation is unheard of. There is some uniqueness here, in the form of the rye spice and ripe fruit notes, but not enough that makes me want to buy another bottle.
