Known for its waxiness, Clynelish 14 is a Highland Single Malt primarily matured in ex-bourbon casks. Scotch mist gives an indication that it is non-chill filtered. Creamy honey, candle wax and lemon juice are prominent on the nose, while rich floral notes with a hint of peppermint lurk in the background. The arrival is warming and aromatic, unfolding a distinctly dry and oily character. Oak bitterness with a touch of salt dominates the medium length finish. Altogether, it is an engaging and intense malt that requires time and is not suitable as everyday dram.

Nosing: Honig Zitrone
Fresh and fruity. Honey and lemon juice, I get a bit of that candle wax as well, probably wouldn't have put my finger on that so easily if someone else hadn't said it. It comes across as a sort of underlying cedar spiciness (turns almost briney with water).

Taste: Zitrus Gewürze Pfeffer
Intense, balanced arrival. Drying and mouth coating more general citrus notes. Spiciness and pepperiness bordering on bitter. Becomes more creamy and fruity (white fruit) with a drop of water.

Finish: Früchte Eiche Gewürze
Medium to long residual fruitiness, oak comes through and spiciness continues. Remains very dry.

Comment:
This is very much a character malt, and not one I would recommend to beginners. It is complex throughout, and needs time to open up and a drop of water to show itself at its best. The nose is very singular, I'd been told by a friend that it had a waxy smell to it, but I was a little unprepared for just how much so. The palate is quite chalanging without water, It definitely is bottled at the higher end of the abv range for its flavours, and benefits from a spot of water and time in the glass to open up. The finish is long and enjoyable either way and dry as a bone. This isn't something I would buy regularly, but I'll defintely keep some around for my friends to try. Engaging stuff at a very reasonable price.
