Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie

One of the most famous bottlings from the Bruichladdich distillery returns in a new guise. Due to the lack of cooling filtration remain the smallest suspended particles in the Malt, which are carriers of special flavor components. This filling tastes fruity light and malty with some salt.

Just to preface, this whisky definitely needs a little water added, maybe enough to bring it down to 46% or so. I'll include notes both with and without below.

Nosing: Pineapple Green Apple Floral Vanilla
When neat there is an acidity which is distinctly unpleasant, it literally stings the nose. The flavours are highly concentrated like smelling fruit cordial.
With some water added its actually quite enjoyable. The acidity calms down and becomes citrus fruit, pineapple juice and green apple. There's an underlying sweetness and a floral note though I couldn't identify it if I tried. There's just a touch of vanilla as well.

Taste: Fruit Sweet Oak Malt
Both with and without water this has an intense sweet arrival. It starts fruity like drinking neat tropical fruit cordial, with some water this slackens off considerably and is much improved. At least when neat the alcohol isn't particularly overbearing. Both with and without water though there's a distinct rich maltiness along with an overabundance of charred oak. Its one of those ones where you might be forgiven for thinking you're chewing on a plank to be honest.

Finish: Malt Oak
Stays fairly consistent regardless of water. Long and oaky, a little bitter along with some residual malt.

Comment:
I'm torn on this one. I really like what they tried to do by bottling at a higher percentage and giving a real intense flavour experience. Sadly, all it's doing in this case is amplifying the issues it has. It just tastes like it's about 5 years too early for it to have come out of the barrel to be honest. It's raw and unapologetically youthful. It's hard to recommend as there are so many other good malts available at that price point.
