Balvenie 12 Years Double Wood

This Balvenie was matured in old sherry and bourbon casks. It makes this scotch interesting but also mild. The orange flavour and a deep sweetness make it a true gem among malt whiskies.

Nosing: Honey, both lighter/more citrus-y fruits, richer fruits, florals both heavy and light, medium sweet candies, i.e., light toffees, light nougats. Sherry is obvious in a very good way.

Taste: More fruits, vanilla. Some mildly sweet cookies with nuts? Some gentle yet full-bodied spices at the warmer end of the spice spectrum. Some richer fruits, we get the sherry notes here. No peat/smoke that I can tell.

Finish: Medium-to-long length emphasizing richer and darker flavors as the finish lingers. Did I fool myself into detecting very light minerals as the finish ended?

Comment: The nosing can continue much longer than one might expect of a 12 YO. I have lingered as long as 30 minutes over the glass before tasting. Patience is rewarded by layers of complexity in the nose. The great starter dram. There is never a wrong season for The Balvenie 12 Y.O. DoubleWood. Come back to it again and again. I rate it a solid 4 out of 5.
