When Billy Walker said in an interview that 'running GlenAllachie is fun', he caught my interest. Can you have a better motivation? With its selection of PX, Oloroso and virgin casks, the 12-year-old expression offers a busy nose. Fruity acidity, butterscotch and shortbread are followed by cinnamon, clay and fresh mint. Full-bodied, peppery and slightly mineral, the taste features banana, sage and hints of mocha. After Eight, orange zest and jelly babies accompany the cask-dominated finish. There are no shortcuts to quality, and this malt is ticking all the boxes.

Nosing: Orange Vanilla Dried Fruit
Orange peel, vanilla custard and dried fruits. Takes a little time in the glass to open up. If you add just a drop of water the sweetness really comes forward.

Taste: Sherry Honey Dried Fruit Orange Oak
Starts sweet and honeyed. Transitions into a slightly sour/bitter orange oil flavour. With oak coming through at the end.

Finish: Oak Spices Pepper
Medium lingering oak spiciness and white pepper. Drying

Comment:
I bought this as a pair with the batch 1 10 year old, and out of the two, I think I prefer the 10 year old a little more. Don't get me wrong, they're both very good, this one especially considering the price. You don't see a lot of 12 year old malts with this quality. The nose is great, but on the palate it's just not my favourite, I'm not a fan of that bitter aspect when neat (even if it is fairly restrained). Worth checking out though, very good stuff overall. At its best with just a drop of water added.

Nosing: Honey Pineapple Oil Almonds Mint not getting a big sherry character here

Taste: Banana Mint Ginger Sweet Honey

Finish: Ginger Fruit Oak

Comment: Sweeter malts tend to not be that popular among a lot of scotch drinkers, and typically the bad rap is from their shallowness. This is great in that it shows that even sweeter malts can have a lot of depth. Really like this one.
